Notes: The prediction of xxx transmembrane spanning proteins among the 410 ORFs from yeast chromosome II relies on the ALOM program based on thealgorithm of Klein et al. (1985), which was found to be among the most efficient and reliable from prediction of transmembrane analysis (Wach et al. , 1992; Fasman and Gilbert, 1990). This method uses the Kyte and Doolittle hydrophobic index for each amino acid ( Kyte and Doolittle, 1982). An average hydrophobicity value (H17) is calculated for all possible segments of 17 amino acids length. The region with H17 above 1.582 are considered as 'integral' (I) while the other hydrophobic regions are considered as 'peripheral' (P). To obtain outer boundaries of the integral region, the segment of 17 amino acids is extended on both sides if the average hydrophobicity remains above 1.582. The Table presents the P:I odds obtained as the decimal exponential oh -9.02*H17+14.27. We consider that the values below 1 correspond to integral spans. Provided that at least one hydrophobic region have a P:I odds below 1, the values between 1 and 15 correspond to 'possibly integral' spans whereas values between 15n and 80 do probably not correspond to integral spans (Goffeau et al., 1993); values >80 are not represented in the above table.
