Getting and Installing ACT

The most up to date version of ACT is always available from the ACT web pages.

Installing Java

Before installing ACT you will need to make sure you have Java installed. Please note that the version of Java that comes with Netscape and Internet Explorer is not sufficient to run ACT.

Installation Instructions for UNIX and GNU/Linux

Change directory to the directory you wish to install ACT in. We will use ~/ in this example and in the next chapter. Uncompress and untar the act_compiled.tar.gz file. The command is:

gzip -d < act_compiled.tar.gz | tar xf -

This will create a directory called ~/act which will contain all the files necessity for running ACT.

For instructions on how to run ACT on UNIX and GNU/Linux once the archive is unpacked see the section called Running ACT on UNIX and GNU/Linux Systems in Chapter 2.

Installation Instructions for Macintosh Systems

Macintosh users should download and run the ACT.bin file from the ACT web pages, which will create a local copy of the the Artemis application (along with an icon).

Installation Instructions for Windows

On Windows systems with Java 1.3 (or higher, see the section called Installing Java), installing ACT is as simple as copying the act.jar file to an appropriate place (such as the desktop or the Programs folder).

For instructions on how to run ACT on Windows once it is unpacked see the section called Running ACT on Windows Systems in Chapter 2 .
